An apology without change is permission to do it again

But an attempt usually leaves evidence. Someone seeks help, changes the conditions, gives warning themselves, acknowledges consequences without another two-hour interrogation. Doesn't demand immediate renewed trust just because feeling guilty is unpleasant.
